LEMON HONEY TEA--
Winter is the time of year that colds and the flu are making their
rounds.
A home remedy that helps to relive sore throats is Lemon Honey Tea.
Our version doesn't use tea, but is very soothing when sipped warm, and
occasionally garling with it.
It's easy to make:
Pour boiling water into a mug or insulated cup.
Add a heaping tablespoon of honey, and a teaspoon of lemon or lime
juice--you can use fresh squeezed, or the bottled juice, like Real
Lemon. (You can adjust the amounts to taste.)
Stir thoroughly and sip slowly--it helps to swish it around your mouth
or even gargle with it to help relieve sore throats.
It's a pretty effective mix... the lemon helps to cut through and break
up mucus in the throat. The honey is soothing to irritated tissues as
well as has a bacteriostatic (kills bacteria) effect.
It's even a soothing drink to help warm you up after spending time
outside shoveling snow, etc.

What a great home remedy!
ReplyDeleteHere's our recipe for a caffeine-free spiced tea similar to Chai that's really good on a cold day. We call it "Yogi tea". It's a little more complicated, but we make a large batch and refrigerate it:
ReplyDelete1 Tablespoon whole black peppercorns
1/2 Tablespoon whole cloves
10 cardamom pods
5 cinnamon sticks
12 cups water
1 cup honey
Crush pepper, cloves and cardamom (I use mortar and pestle). Put everything except honey in a crock pot and simmer for 3-4 hours. Strain (mesh colander is OK; I like line it with a cheesecloth or tea towel. Too much fine sediment to go through a coffee filter). Add honey while it's still hot, then cool and refrigerate. Mix with equal parts milk and heat to serve.
OOPS! I left out an essential ingredient of the Yogi Tea: 3 1" pieces of fresh ginger go in the simmer also.
ReplyDeleteI'm still learning how to do this blog thing... I answered you earlier but it didn't "take"...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, your recipe sounds great!
